Kneeling Tara

Preah Khan
Sandstone, 130 cm (4'3")
late 12th to early 13th century
Musee Guimet, Paris

This beautifully carved Tara may also reproduce, according to Thierry Zephir (Millennium of Glory, p. 304) the likeness of Queen Jayarajadevi, the first wife of Jayavarman VII. In Khmer art, the kings and queens were often identified with their tutelary deities.
