Head of Buddha

Vat Romlok, Angkor Borei
Sandstone, 28 cm (11")
Khmer, early 7th century
National Museum of Cambodia

The Buddha's calm and meditative nature is highlighted in this beautiful early head. His almond eyes, hair curls, ushnisha (topknot), elomngated earlobes, and bow-shaped mouth are traditional; the thick lower lip and prominent chin, however, are specifically Gupta.
