In the "hell of great screaming," sinners are tortured by having their joints pulled apart while suspended from a rack with heavy rocks attached to their legs. Meanwhile, demons pound nails into every part of their bodies.

Fortunately, terrible punishments like this did not last forever. Unlike the Christian concept of eternal damnation, in Hinduism the soul would eventually be purified of its sin and could then be reborn, hopefully to do better in the next life.
