Boulder With Foundations For A Pavilion

Sigiriya Water Gardens

This boulder has been integrated into a brick wall in the water garden. Cuts on the rock are footings for masonry. Bricks were inserted into the footings to provide the foundation for a wooden pleasure pavilion that once overlooked the gardens.

Similar structures were perched atop the numerous boulders and rock terraces that occupy the gardens closer to Sigiriya Rock (next page). Their brick foundations and wood buildings are now long gone, but these cuts in the rock still remain to tell the story.
