Gravestone

Groote Kerk, Galle Fort

Several 19th-century and earlier Dutch gravestones are laid into the floor of the church. This one belongs to Abraham Samlant, the Commander of Galle who died in 1766 (his wall memorial is shown on the previous page). Decoration upon the gravestone includes skull-and-crossbones, angels, and, emerging from his bier, the resurrecting skeleton of Samlant himself at the sounding of the Last Trumpet.
