West Gate and Northwest Observation Tower

Hwaseong Fortress
1794-1796
Suwon, Korea

The fortress - actually a fortified wall surrounding the center of Suwon - was built by King Jeongjo. Jeongjo's father was the unfortunate Prince Sado, who was starved to death inside a rice chest. For another example of Joseon-era fortifications, see Pungnammun Gate in Jeonju.
