Daejo-jeon

Changdeokgung
Seoul, Korea

Daejo Hall was the queen's residence. It was destroyed in the fire of 1917, the same fire that also destroyed the king's residence (previous page). The queen's hall was rebuilt using materials from the Gyeongbokgung palace. The hall's final resident (till 1966) was Empress Sunjeong, the last empress of the Joseon Dynasty.

The brass vessels in front of the building (photo below) were filled with water to be used in case of fire. Similar vessels can be seen among the palace buildings of the Forbidden City in Beijing.
