Senju Kannon #40

Kamakura period, 1251-1256
Originally from Rengeo-in, Kyoto
Now kept in Tokyo National Museum, Japan.

This sculpture, a National Treasure, comes from the Hondo of Rengeo-in (Sanjusangendo). It is from the hand of Tankei (1173-1256). Senju = "Thousand-arms," signifying the power of this Kannon to save all sentient beings. Its strange color is due to the exhibit lighting in 2000; lately the statue is lit more naturally.
