Nio

Kamakura Period, 13th century
Sanjusangen-do Temple, Kyoto

Among the statues in the temple are these fierce Nio, shaped like wrestlers with exaggerated tendons, veins (especially the descending veins on their upper pectorals), and musculature. The statues are life-size (64") with Naraen Kongo on the left, Misshaku Kongo on the right.
