Stupa Reliefs

Kiyomizu Magaibutsu
Kawabe (Minamikyushu), Kagoshima

This line of stupas in raised relief may date back to the Kamakura period. They are gorinto, a type of Buddhist funerary monument that was first used in Japan by Tendai and other esoteric sects. See also: the modern gorinto, in China's Famen Si. The stupas carved here are presumably funeral memorials for priests associated with the shrine.
