This 8th century dry lacquer statue represents Subodai, one of the Ten Great Disciples of Buddha. He symbolizes the Buddhist concept of "ultimate void." The statue was one of a group of 27, the "Family of Shaka," consisting of Bodhisattvas, Guardians, and Disciples.
