Gassho Dogu

2000-1000 BC, from Kazahari No. 1
Tokyo National Museum

This seated dogu displays his hands in a position of prayer (gassho). Details of face and costume are similar to the standing dogu, shown on the previous page. To summarize, the dogu that we have seen in this exhibition are prehistoric (Jomon), found buried and broken in archaeological sites all over the Japanese archipeligo, organized into a few distinct types, very numerous (over 10,000), and that is all that we know for sure about them.
