Chuku Dogu

2000-1000 BC, from Chobonaino
Hakodate Cultural Exchange Center

This hollow (chuku), standing, dogu presents a fierce appearance. Incised horizontal bands – probably representing tattoos – are applied across the chest, pelvis, knees, and calves; its shoulder bones and knee bones are especially emphasized by circular forms. It is a largish statue, at least compared to other dogu, at 16 inches in height. Believe it or not, some sources disagree over such basic points as whether the figure is male or female! But trust me, it's male. For additional information, see: The Chobonaino Dogu by Doug Bailey (2009).
