Heian Shrine (Heian Jingu)

Kyoto, Japan

This modern shrine (1895) was built to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto (794). It is dedicated to emperors Kammu (737-806) and Komei (1846-1867, the father of Meiji), the first and last emperors to rule from Kyoto.

The shrine is a 2/3 scale recreation of the original 8th century palace of Heian-kyo (Kyoto). Shown in this photo is the Oten-mon, a replica of the original palace gate.
