Asuka Plain

Asuka, Japan

Asuka, the cradle of Japanese civilization, saw the gradual rise to power of the imperial clan, beginning in the fourth century AD. The first emperor, Jimmu, may be interred in one of the innumerable kofun (mound tombs) which dot the area. In this photo, the golden rice harvest carpets the plain, while a mountain gently rises in the background.
