Kinnara Reliefs

Candi Shiva, Prambanan

These finely-executed Kinnara reliefs can be compared to the equally artistic Kinnara reliefs that decorate the band of Candi Vishnu. The central lion, inserted between every pair of reliefs and framed by elaborate carving, is a new element in the Candi Shiva panels. The vases of the Candi Shiva boquets (between the Kinnaras) are also more elaborately decorated, with chains of jewels that drape their bulbous bases.
