Sultan's Palace

Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The Sultan's Palace (kraton) in Yogyakarta was originally built in 1756. It is currently occupied by the Sultan and his family, who are still-respected relicts from an earlier time, and given over to musical performances and other activities for visitors. A multi-use pavilion is seen here. Note the Chinese blue-and-white vases in the foreground, a luxury item that has been exported from China to SE Asia from Ming times as a signifier of royalty.
