Attendant Figure

Gupta, Early 5th century AD
Cave 5, Udayagiri, Madhya Pradesh, India.

This is one of the better-preserved attendants on Varaha. His placement is just off of Varaha's right elbow. His iconography (beard and rosary) is consistent with Brahma, or possibly, Agni. However, considering the many similar figures that appear in early Indian art, it is also possible that this figure just represents a generic type of ascetic.
