Shakyamuni Triad

Shrine Interior
Monastery 1, Ratnagiri, 8th century

The interior of the shrine (center of north wall) contains this triad of Shakyamuni Buddha flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani (photo left and photo right, respectively). The bodhisattvas can be told apart by their hairdos and the shape of their lotus flowers. In their right hands, each bodhisattva holds a chauri.

The statue of Shakyamuni, in bhumisparsha mudra, was carved from separately fitted blocks of stone. Its face was deliberately damaged in the 13th century by iconoclastic Muslims.
