Platform Carving

Ambika Mata temple, Jagat

The base of the platform is carved in three bands. In the upper band, graceful kinnaras play the flute and vina. In the middle, a band of elephants is presented frontally as if to support the platform. Below, a row of kirttimukha monster masks. The kirttimukhas serve a protective function and are most often found above entrances and doorways. Here, they protect the foundation of the temple.
