Rabbit In The Moon

Krishna Temple, Vijayanagara

This unusual image from the ceiling (underside of a lintel) shows the Moon, illustrated as a rabbit inside a red circle, between two nagas (snakes). Asians see a "rabbit in the Moon," in the same way that Europeans see a "man in the Moon." The meaning of the nagas in this context is unclear, unless it might be a rebus of some sort (nagachandra can be a person's name in India).
