Tomb of Mohammad Qutb Shah V

Qutb Shahi Tombs, Golconda (map)

Mohammad Qutb Shah V, the fifth ruler of the dynasty, ruled from 1612-1626. He was the nephew, successor, and son-in-law of Mohammad Quli Qutb Shah IV (previous page). Mohammad V and his successors built their tombs in an adjacent area, northeast of the earlier tombs.

The south face of Mohammad V's tomb is shown here. Its architectural form is a pyramidal two-story building, elevated on a platform, and capped by an onion dome and finial. The lower story is arcaded, with seven arches to a side. The battlemented upper story presents five blind arches on each side, with minaret-like finials decorating the corners. The base of the dome is petalled like a lotus, suggestive of Hindu influence upon its design.
