North side, Lingaraja Temple

Late 11th century

Lingaraja opens to the east. One of the most celebrated temples in India, it is currently (2005) not open to Western visitors. Access to Hindu temples is controlled by the local temple priests, not by the government.

From this vantage point, one can at least see all four buildings of the developed Orissan temple, as well as the ghanta on the Jaga mohan. Visitors on the viewing platform may be asked for a donation, even though the temple precincts remain closed.
