Varaha

Cave 3 portico, Badami

The boar's muzzle does not quite touch Bhu Devi, who props herself up stiffly with her hand on his supporting shoulder. The boar's head is painted. The carving between the back of his head and the chakra in his upper right hand is confused. The lower half of the relief is very light in color, and must have been cleaned. Varaha's chest is thin, the hips large with an awkward transition from the waist, and the right leg noticably thicker than the left.

Vishnu in the heroic form of Varaha was an emblem of the Early Chalukya kings; Mangalesha's royal dedication is located nearby.
