Ramesseum, Ozymandias

Ozymandias

Ramesseum

This ruined colossus was the subject of Shelly's famous poem on the futility of earthly power and glory, although Shelly himself never saw the statue, but only knew of it from others' descriptions and sketches. "Ozymandias" is the Greek form of "wsr-ma'at-re", the throne name of Ramesses II. The statue was originally 60 feet high. It showed Ramesses seated on his throne, and was set up in the first courtyard of the temple. In its present position it has fallen into the threshold of the second courtyard.
