Segesta. Cramps

The small, square holes cut into the stones of the stereobate probably received metal cramps. If so, then the two blocks, which have been restored facing the viewer, should have been restored facing each other -- but then of course we would not see the holes, and the lesson would be lost.

A metal cramp would have passed through the facing holes between two blocks in order to join them together. This seems more likely to me than other possibilities (such as levers or lifting clamps) because the positioning of the holes is off-center (right to left) and at the very base of the blocks. Lifting would be quite awkward from such a position.
