Ceramic Horse

Shaanxi History Museum, Xi'an

Home to 370,000 cultural relics - most from the Tang dynasty and earlier - the Shaanxi History Museum offers a privileged glimpse into Xi'an's imperial past, when the city was known as Chang'an, or "Perpetual Peace." This pottery horse is decorated in sancai ("three color") glaze. These colors are a hallmark of Tang production, and are often applied to funerary horses, camels, guardian animals, and vessels.
