Pan Pipes

Tang Dynasty
Beilin Museum, Xi'an

Each pipe in this instrument has a fixed pitch.

A pipa (lute) and chimes were depicted in other panels (not shown). This by no means exhausted the repertoire of available instruments, which included a great variety of instruments from each family (plucked, blown, bowed, and struck). Tang Dynasty music was considerably enriched by the movement of music, instruments, and entertainers all up and down the Silk Road.
