Avalokiteshvara
Northern Zhou Dynasty
 Beilin Museum, Xi'an
The bodhisattva of compassion, identified by the vase that he holds in his left hand, dates from the Northern Zhou (557 - 581). Perhaps one distinguishing feature is the figure's wide-spread, pipestem legs, reminiscent of Gandharan sculpture from several centuries before.
