The trussed frame that supports the hall's roof (see previous page) is an unusual design for China. Its purpose was to reduce the number of columns needed inside to support the frame. This approach turned out to be very successful in providing a large, uninterrupted, interior space. For some reason, though, it was not followed through in later structures.
