Signal Tower

The Bund, Shanghai

This odd-looking structure is a signal tower (1907) located on the Quai de France, otherwise known as the French Bund. It displayed the weather forecasts for the China coast as signalled from the Siccawei Observatory. The tower with its semaphore station was maintained by the Jesuits for the benefit of local shipping.
