Thousand-Buddha Hall

Five Dynasties Period and later
Zhenguo Si, Shanxi

The buddha and attendants in Zhenguo's Thousand-Buddha Hall date from the Five Dynasties period, but their facial surfaces have been reworked in later times; what remains, of the original 10th-century statues, is (as near as we can determine) the fullness yet pinched expression of their faces. Note the interior bracketing of the great eave (previous page), that is seen on the left-hand side of this photo.
