Guanyin

Main Hall, Shuanglin Si

Guanyin crosses the ocean, in this painted relief from the Shakyamuni Hall. The goddess is often associated with water; she is the patron saint of fishermen, and her cult center is Putuoshan Island off the eastern coast of China. Symbolically, she is said to help her devotees cross the Ocean of Existence and achieve salvation; a group of them surrounds her in this relief.
