Just about every exposed rock formation in Guilin, and up and down the Li River's 50-mile course between Guilin and Yangshuo, has been awarded a poetic and, often, rather inscrutable name; but Elephant Trunk Hill does seem, with a little imagination, to resemble an elephant who is dipping its trunk in the river to take a drink.
