Shakyamuni Buddha

Ming Dynasty
Main Hall, Huayan Si, Datong

Shakyamuni, the hall's central Buddha, is seated on a tall throne. The statue is made of gilded and painted wood (Zhang Hongbin, Datong Huayan Monastery, p. 6). He is surrounded by the Five Directional Buddhas (not shown here) named Akshobhya (East), Ratnasambhava (South), Amitabha (West), and Amoghasiddhi (North)1. A smaller, unidentified Buddha stands below and in front of Shakyamuni's throne.
