Pot With Crimped Mouth

Western Zhou Dynasty
Three Gorges Museum, Chongqing

The crimped mouth of this pot may have helped somehow to seal the vessel, or it may just be a local style. Its find-spot is Zhongba Zhongxian. In the Three Gorges region, during the first millennium BC, vessels were often made of this readily available clay; they have various shapes (see other examples on the previous and next pages), but the same kind of crinkled mouth.
