Wang Jian and Musician

Chengdu

Wang Jian's mortuary statue is 86cm (34in) high. The seated king is posed in a formal, yet modest and approachable, way. This realistic sculpture is thought to be a life portrait of the king. The statue of a musician, one of 22 surrounding the edge of the coffin platform, is finely crafted; Wang Jian's orchestra included strings, winds, and percussion instruments of the Han and minority nationalities. Other tomb finds included guardian statues, the king's seal, a jade belt, a scalloped silver box, and other precious items.
