Vaisravana

Tang Dynasty
Sichuan Provincial Museum, Chengdu

Vaisravana, the directional guardian of the north, is usually called Duowen in China. The museum's label names this figure as "Dhanada," an alternate title that refers to his function as bestower of wealth. Like many statues in the museum's collection, this one was unearthed in Qionglai, an ancient kiln site near Chengdu.
