Bai Ta Si

Beijing

The Bai Ta Si (Miaoying, or White Dagoba Temple), was built in the 1270s under the patronage of Khubilai Khan. It is the only Yuan Dynasty monument to survive in contemporary Beijing. The temple takes its name from the Himalayan-style white stupa whose top can just be seen in this photograph, above and behind (north of) the temple's first image hall. The image hall is Chinese in style, and later in date than the stupa.
