Grotto of Complete Enlightenment

Scene 29, Baodingshan, Dazu (map)

A Vairocana triad (Shakyamuni - Vairocana - Amitabha) occupies the rear wall, flanked by twelve Bodhisattvas lined up six on a side. The kneeling Bodhisattva in front of the triad symbolizes the desire of all of them to be taught by Vairocana. This scene illustrates the Yuan Jue Jing, or Sutra of Complete Enlightenment, from which the grotto takes its name.
